Pleasure Island is awash in purple, gold and green

At 4 p.m. Saturday, Villagio on Perdido Key presents the first Perdido Key Mardi Gras Street Party. The event, which has been months in the making, was spearheaded by Marcus Reno Story, co-owner of the popular martini spot, Jellyfish Bar.Story said Saturday's event will be a traditional New Orleans style Mardi Gras bash featuring Mardi Gras-inspired cuisine, live entertainment and a children's play area. Revelers garbed in purple and gold will toss beads and other items from the Villagio balcony to festival-goers along the parking lot. Lost Key Java will provide genuine muffulettas and gumbo. Cub's Crawfish on Lillian Highway will be on hand serving baskets of fresh, spicy crawfish, corn and sausage. And upstairs, the Jellyfish will roll its super sushi, courtesy of Joe Tillery. And yes, there will be enough red beans and rice to feed a small army.So forget making dinner, because this bash promises to delight the palette, Mardi Gras style. The Perdido Key Mardi Gras Street Party will feature a live Zydeco band on the square, and upstairs at the Jellyfish, Damien Louviere will entertain the crowd with his brand of acoustic music. This event is an effort to raise money for the Perdido Bay Youth Sports Association, but it's also a free event for the community of Perdido Key.

Komets have week to rehash two losses

This time they've got a full week of practice to stew after losing 3-2 to Flint in overtime on Saturday and 4-1 at Bloomington on Sunday.

"It's just like the start of the year, where we outplay a team and outshoot them but couldn't outscore them," coach Al Sims said from Bloomington. "Every chance they had tonight was in the net. They must have had five chances all night, and they scored four times."

Fort Wayne outshot the PrairieThunder 37-16 on Sunday, but Bloomington goaltender Loic Lacasse made 36 saves. He also made 36 saves last week in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Komets in Fort Wayne. The K's outshot Flint 44-31 on Saturday night, but Matt Spezza made 42 saves.

"We're making goaltenders look a lot better than they really are," Sims said. "It was just our inability to score.

Don't cheer smoking ban; you may be next target

Interesting to me is how all the angry smokers are so quick and happy to warn JWO that the activity is illegal. Why now all of the sudden are smokers worried about the fate of non-smokers? You didnt care before when you carelessly blew your cancer sticks at non-smokers, so stop acting like you care now if JWO gets arrested. What you do not really like is that JWO has found a very effective measure to ensure bar/restaurant owners appreciate the business from all patrons and not just the careless smoker. " .

Kari, We Need To Have A Chat

Yeah…um, can I come into your room here for a second? Yes?…OK, good…yeah. No, no…you're not in trouble, son. I just think we…you and I…yeah, we need to have a little one-on-one talk. Can I just sit over here in this…no, no, don't get up…I'll just sit right here in this chair…you stay right there.

Huh, what? No, it's not THAT talk…it's just that, well, I couldn't help noticing something that happened last night during, you know, the game. Yes, yes…that's right, the Vancouver game. See, first of all, if you look at it on the whole, you really didn't do too terribly bad. I mean, if you simply look at the stats you did stop 26 of the 28 shots that you faced. That's good. Oh, and while we're at it…how about those friends of yours playing defense holding the Canucks to just 28 shots, eh? We've always said that anything under 30 is good, haven't we, son? Yes…yes we have.

Cis' blog roundup - Friday

Herb phoned in the tip to our CdA bureau, which people did long before there was an internet, but this nevertheless shows how alert local bloggers can contribute to the daily news report.

Journalists love getting "the scoop," and I wanted to make sure Herb got recognized.

Sniff, swish and spit

More than 450 domestic and international wineries will be at this year's Boston Wine Expo, pouring their latest and greatest wines for connoisseurs and fledgling oenophiles alike.

The expo will kick off its 17th year this weekend at the Seaport World Trade Center and Seaport Hotel on Boston's waterfront.

According to show director Ed Hurley, it's the largest wine event in the country. The main event on the show floor is the Grand Tasting, where the vineyards are set up in the center ``like a large reception,'' he said.

``For the most part, it's made up of wine tables,'' said Hurley. ``Instead of seeing rows and rows of booths, all of the wineries are all there. They're all grouped by countries. There are ancillary booths with wine products (along the sides).''

Visitors can choose from more than 1,800 different wines from 13 countries.
